2017 Pinot Gris
Winemaker Note: At Early Mountain, we typically bottle two styles of Pinot Gris each year inspired by our different vineyard blocks: Block 1 and Block 78 together as a blend and Block 9. Our Block 1/78-based Pinot Gris is bottled early to emphasize the freshness and aromatic quality of the variety. In addition to the fruit from our blocks, this wine is 15% fruit from neighboring Barton vineyard. A small percentage saw neutral barrel for both primary and malolactic fermentation, but for the most part, this is a slow, cool fermentation in stainless steel tanks. The wine stayed on its fine lees for five months, which gives it added texture and complexity of flavor. This wine combines both ripeness and backbone giving it both intensity and precision along with the fresh fruit quality that is the signature of this bottling.
Wine Description: Classic fresh pear/orchard fruit character in both the aromas and flavors. There is purity in the flavors that is invigorating, with an almost alpine feel to its brisk, energetic profile-a bit more volume and breadth than the average Virginia Pinot Gris and the wine lingers with cleansing acidity.
Food Pairing: If it is something you want to eat in the summer, crudo/ceviche, shellfish, all that lighter fare, this Pinot Gris will be happy to join the party.
