2022 Rose

2022 Rose
Strawberries, white nectarine, and red grapefruit drive the aromas of this wine, which are echoed by meyer lemon, clementine and a slight salinity.. There is a bit more acidity this year, with the texture prolonging the palette presence, leaving a feeling of freshness and energy. The wine is layered with flavor, but no single note demands the spotlight, instead they all operate in harmony, bringing a feeling of poise and completeness.

Winemaker Notes
We continue to ferment block by block to understand precisely what we get (and want) from each. In 2022, we made a few notable changes, adding more early-picked Merlot to the blend, with Petit Verdot driving color and depth. This year we chose to direct-press Malbec, for this rosé, which brings bright acidity and fresher stone fruit aromas. Cabernet Franc provides the background herbal and savory notes that have always supported the fruit in this bottling, and this is likely the last vintage we retain a skosh of Syrah. 2022 has a bit more brightness to it, coming from the cool evenings and dry weeks leading up to harvest. This vintage also displays a more delicate color compared to the 2021 (due to not soaking the Malbec in 2022). The citrus tones of our rosé take a bit more of a leading role, edging the berry character to the side, just a bit. 2021 has more density, but continues in our “classic” style, fresh, energetic and thirst quenching.
Vineyard Notes
2022 was an eventful vintage for Early Mountain, with climatic events varying significantly from site to site.
Early spring, we experienced few frost events, escaping significant fruit damage. Throughout spring and into summer, we saw typical showers, which thankfully cleared up around bloomtime, returning shortly after, resulting in a bit more of a rainy season than 2021 experienced.. As the season progressed, we saw greater variability in rainfall depending on site, throughout the state. The late season rains, leading to harvest were also accompanied by notable drying, and at times, significant diurnal shifts, which allowed for balanced vineyards to fully ripen prior to seeing the remnants of Hurricane Ian.
